Why HWB

People before profit, always

HWB isn’t just a wellness centre. It’s a hub for connection. A place to reset, slow down, and feel part of something bigger, right here in the heart of Barry.

“What helps me, helps others.”
01

Everyone belongs here

Welcome exactly as you are. Shift workers, students, carers, veterans, athletes, neighbours. This space belongs to all of us.

02

Wellness for everyone

Premium therapies like sauna, cold water and chromatherapy, without the premium price tag. Because looking after yourself shouldn’t be a luxury.

03

Stronger together

Recovery happens through connection. We create moments of shared experience, so no one has to do it alone.

04

Rooted in the community

Proud to host local therapists, beauty pros and mental health specialists, supporting each other and the people of Barry.

Our founder

Built from lived experience

Born from one man’s journey

HWB began with Jake Hudson. He joined the Royal Navy at 16, and years later faced his own battle with mental health. Through recovery, he saw first hand how vital community and accessible wellbeing really are.

So he built HWB, a place where no one has to struggle alone, and where the support that helped him is there for everyone in Barry.

Our services & benefits

Move between both saunas, the cold plunge baths and the wellbeing room — it’s all included.

Cold · 6–10°C
Contrast therapy

Cold Plunge Baths

Two deep ice plunge baths kept between 6–10°C for powerful contrast therapy.

What it does: Cold immersion stimulates blood flow, reduces inflammation, and releases endorphins. Whether you’re an athlete, shift worker, or just need a reset, you’ll feel the mental clarity and physical relief almost instantly.

Why it works: Used regularly, cold therapy can support better sleep, a stronger immune system, and reduced muscle soreness.

Step in, reset your system, and leave feeling recharged.

Heat
High dry heat

Traditional Finnish Sauna

A high-temperature, dry-air sauna with centuries of healing heritage.

What it does: The intense heat promotes full-body detox, supports cardiovascular health, improves breathing, and relaxes deep muscle tension. As your body sweats, it flushes out toxins, clears the skin, and eases tightness.

Why it works: The dry air raises your core temperature, increasing circulation, calming the nervous system, and triggering natural recovery from the inside out.

Sweat it out, breathe deep, come back to balance.

Infrared
Deep, gentle heat

Infrared Sauna

A dry heat therapy that uses infrared light to gently warm the body from within, not just the air around you.

What it does: Infrared waves penetrate deep into muscles and joints, easing pain, improving circulation, boosting cell regeneration and promoting better sleep. Ideal after training, during recovery, or in times of stress.

Why it works: Unlike traditional saunas, infrared heat reaches deeper layers of tissue, raising your internal temperature and supporting natural detox, inflammation reduction, and hormonal balance.

Let the warmth sink in, and feel your body start to heal.

Recovery
Compression recovery

Presso-therapy

Dynamic air compression boots and arm sleeves that massage your legs and arms, flushing out fatigue after training, a shift on your feet, or a long day.

What it does: Sequential pressure waves move through each chamber, boosting circulation, clearing out lactic acid and easing swelling, so tired, heavy arms and legs feel lighter and properly recovered.

Why it works: By gently pumping blood and lymph back toward the heart, presso-therapy speeds up your body’s natural recovery, reduces muscle soreness and supports better movement, whether you train hard or are simply on your feet all day.

Sit back, let the pressure do the work, and feel your arms and legs come back to life.

Calm
Your sanctuary

Community Well-being Room

A calming space to pause, reflect, and connect — whether you stretch, meditate, breathe or simply sit still.

It’s designed to be yours: a moment of quiet before the cold, a place to write or recharge after the sauna. The room adapts to group sessions, 1-to-1 wellbeing work, or solo reflection, always supporting your mental and emotional reset.

Your calm space to rest, reflect, or simply be.

Community garden
Outdoor safe space

Community Garden

A quiet green space in the heart of Barry, built by the community for the community, where you can step away from the noise and simply breathe.

Created through community collaboration and the support of local businesses, the garden gives everyone a calm outdoor place to relax, reflect and connect with others. Share a brew, get your hands in the soil, or just sit a while in the fresh air.

Time outdoors, alongside people who understand, is one of the simplest ways to lift your mood and feel less alone. It is open to veterans, families and the whole community, with no pressure and no judgment.

A safe space to slow down, get some air, and feel part of something.

Our story, Jake Hudson

From Royal Navy to community champion

Our Story, Jake Hudson

At 16, Jake joined the Royal Navy, where he learned discipline, leadership and the value of camaraderie. Life changed when he had to return home unexpectedly following the loss of his mum.

Years later, his biggest battle came after leaving the service, when he faced significant mental health challenges and some of the darkest periods of his life.

Throughout it all, one person never gave up on him, his wife, Kim.

When Jake struggled to believe in himself, Kim believed in him enough for both of them. Through every setback, every difficult day and every challenge, she remained his rock, his strength and the person who kept him moving forward.

Alongside their children, her unwavering love, patience and support became the foundation of his recovery and helped him rediscover purpose, hope and a belief that better days were ahead.

That journey would eventually inspire the creation of Health Hwb.

We only went for a sauna

Where it began

We Only Went For A Sauna

Sometimes the smallest acts of kindness can change a life. At a time when Jake was struggling with his mental health and finding it difficult to see a way forward, Helen and Ian George saw something he couldn’t see in himself. Potential. Not the struggles he was facing, but the person they knew he could become. Rather than walking away, they reached out.

They invited him to West Wales for the day to experience contrast therapy. A sauna. An ice bath. A chance to step away from the noise and simply breathe. What started as a simple invitation became much more than that.

Their kindness, encouragement and unwavering belief helped Jake begin to see a future beyond the challenges he was facing. They became trusted friends, mentors and a constant source of support, helping him realise that no matter how difficult life becomes, there is always a way forward. More importantly, they helped him believe in himself again.

More than anything, Helen and Ian simply wanted to see Jake, Kim and the boys come through the difficult times and build the life they deserved. They saw a family worth believing in and never stopped encouraging them forward, even when the road ahead seemed uncertain. Their support was never about recognition or reward. It came from a place of genuine care and a desire to see others succeed.

The phrase “We Only Went For A Sauna” captures the moment everything began. A reminder that sometimes all it takes is one act of kindness, one conversation, and people willing to believe in you when you can’t yet believe in yourself.

What started with a sauna became a vision, and what started as an act of kindness became Health Hwb. The rest, as they say, is history.

Supporting our veterans

What we do for the community

From service to strength

Welsh Veterans Awards finalist

From service to strength

Our founder Jake has been named a finalist at the Welsh Veterans Awards two years running. For Jake, the award was never the point. The focus has always been on supporting our veterans and our wider community, and showing people there are other ways to look after themselves in the crazy, challenging world we live in.

It is about making self-care and wellbeing something everyone can reach, whatever they are carrying. As Jake says: “No matter how far you’ve fallen, it’s still possible to rise.”

Wellness belongs to everyone. We’re making sure of it.

By Kim Hudson

The Nail Girl

At the heart of the Health Hwb is a belief that looking after yourself isn’t a luxury, it’s a form of care. And no one embodies that more than Kim Hudson, founder of The Nail Girl.

Kim brings more than polish, she brings positivity, connection, and a calm, welcoming space where everyone feels seen. Whether it’s your regular gel manicure, a full set of builder gel nails, or just a chance to relax and catch up, The Nail Girl is all about that little moment in your week where you pause, feel good, and leave a little lighter than you came in.

Her clients come for the nails, but stay for the warm chat, the uplifting energy, and the genuine care that Kim offers in every appointment. It’s more than a treatment, it’s a reset.

As Kim puts it: “Everyone deserves a space where they can just be themselves. No judgement, just kindness, and a fresh set of nails to remind you that you matter.”

That’s exactly why The Nail Girl is such an important part of the Hwb — because confidence and care go hand in hand. Book an appointment or follow Kim’s work on Instagram, or book via WhatsApp.

Salon Revive isn’t just about great hair (though you’ll absolutely get that too) — it’s about transformation in every sense. Sam has created a space where you can take a breath, feel seen, and walk out feeling refreshed, not just on the outside but inside too.

With years of experience and a calm, uplifting presence, Sam has a gift for making people feel at ease. Whether you’re after a fresh cut, a colour revamp, or just some time out from the stress of life, Salon Revive offers more than a service, it offers sanctuary.

Sam believes in the power of small things to make a big difference: “A good haircut can boost your whole mood. It’s not vanity, it’s self-worth, it’s identity, it’s confidence.”

We’re proud to have Salon Revive as one of our core partners — because wellness isn’t just what you do in the gym or therapy room. Follow Sam’s work on Instagram, or book via WhatsApp.

Reiki by Helen

Tucked inside the Health Hwb is a space where the noise quiets, the tension softens, and you’re invited to simply breathe. That space is held by Helen, the calming presence behind Reiki by Helen.

Helen offers Reiki, a gentle, energy-based therapy that promotes balance, deep relaxation, and emotional release. Whether you’re carrying stress, recovering from burnout, or just need to reconnect with yourself, Helen’s sessions create a moment of stillness in the middle of a busy life.

Her approach is intuitive and deeply compassionate. Every session is tailored to the individual — a safe, nurturing environment where nothing is expected, and everything is welcome. Many who visit her talk about feeling lighter, more grounded, and more in tune with themselves after just one session.

As Helen puts it: “We all hold onto more than we realise — tension, emotion, pressure. Reiki gives you space to let go. To feel held. To feel whole.”

Massage & Yoga

Jade Yoga

Step into Jade Yoga and the pace of the day softens. This is Jade’s space within the Hwb, a calm room of plants, warm light and quiet intention, built for wellness and therapies that bring body, mind and soul back into harmony.

Jade’s heart is in restorative yoga, a gentle, grounding practice that helps you slow your breath, let go of what you’re holding, and reconnect with yourself. It’s yoga as a reset rather than a workout, open to every body and every level.

Alongside the mat, Jade offers a full menu of massage and bodywork. Aromatherapy, deep tissue and classic Swedish, plus Balinese head massage and reflexology to ease tension and restore balance. Her specialist treatments go further still, with Thai harmony, hot stone and warm bamboo massage, and an indulgent foot ritual to finish.

Every treatment is tailored to you, a personalised approach in a space designed purely to relax, reset and restore. As Jade puts it: “Balance, heal, thrive.”

Wellness belongs to everyone. We’re making sure of it.

My first time at the Health Hwb tonight, amazing experience. Jake is really knowledgeable and made us feel relaxed and in safe hands from the start. I never thought I could brave an ice bath but managed 2 minutes on my second dip. You feel so good afterwards.
